ONE ZEN MUMMA
AN INTERVIEW WITH SARAH WRIGHT OLSEN
Here at Chasing Unicorns we are champions of beautiful, strong and inspiring mothers, mothers who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, share wisdom and support others. Actress, mother, wife, co-founder of Your Zen Mama
and all round incredible woman Sarah Wright Olsen is all these things and so much more. Recently Sarah took a little time out of her day to chat LA life, family, fashion and Your Zen Mama
with us, we hope her honest, inspiring and down to earth vibes resonate with you as much as they do with us at Chasing Unicorns.
COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE SENTENCE?
I am a woman, a mother, a friend, a lover, an adventurer, and girl forever in search of the perfect guacamole.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE?
My day starts with one of my kids waking me in the morning. When I open my eyes I am sandwiched between the two of them and their sweet and patient father is sleeping on a sliver of our king bed. We run into the kitchen start breakfast and begin our day. Depending on the time of year our days are going to my older sons camp or school for drop off and getting my little one home for nap. This is when I get work done at home or on my computer. Then we leave to pick up Wyatt and head home to play, read books, and start dinner. My husband Eric comes home in the evening and we eat dinner, take baths and get ready for bed. We put the kids down, hang in the living room to work, watch a favourite show, eat chocolate (me), and then head to bed.
WHAT IS IT LIKE LIVING AND RAISING A FAMILY IN BUSY L.A - THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE SURPRISING?
I love living here actually. I have lived in LA for about 14 years and I have lived all over the city. My favourite spot is where we live now on the west side of town near the beach. I never get sick of seeing it, its like watching a fire burn, it's overwhelming in its beauty and how it looks different every day. The traffic sucks, but I’m kind of use to it. The mom/birth community is surprisingly amazing. There are so many ways to connect with other mothers in your area.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY?
I love it when we are at our home in Idaho simply riding our bikes to the coffee shop every day.
WHAT ARE THE VALUES AND PASSIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE MOST TO PASS ON TO YOUR KIDS?
I want my children to be kind and empathetic. I want them to see others and feel compassion and love. I want them to find the things that they enjoy in life and figure out a way to do them every day. I want them to always feel secure in their foundation so they can have the freedom to grow and try new things.
YOU HAVE SO MUCH ON THE GO, HOW DO YOU BALANCE MOTHERHOOD, ACTING AND YOUR ZEN MAMA?
It was really hard for Teresa and I to keep up with everything at YZM. We did it for a long time but between our work and our growing families we found it difficult to take the next steps in our business. So we hired one of our best friends to help us and it has made YZM grow and flourish. It has also given us the time to focus on the parts of our site that are really exciting to us. With acting everything is always up in the air. You are either traveling, working in town or waiting on a job. I think we just try to focus on the days ahead and get as much done as we can in a day. Lists are everything!
HOW DID THE CONCEPT FOR YOUR ZEN MAMA COME ABOUT?
When Teresa and I were pregnant and then new mommies, we were brainstorming ideas that we had about growing a positive parenting community for families, caregivers, doulas etc. We wanted to create an online village for people to write, express, explore, ask questions, and feel inspired. We also wanted to write and be open about our own personal journeys during our pregnancies and as new mamas navigating a very different world.
ADVICE ON LAUNCHING A BUSINESS WITH A FRIEND?
I guess it could be different for everyone. Teresa and I are very inspired by each other. I truly love her and her family and I learn so much from her. We have a mutual respect for one another and our ideas are very in line. We also have an open honest line of communication so nothing feels left unsaid.
WHAT INFLUENCES/INSPIRES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Jane Birkin in the late 60’s - comfort, femininity, classic designs - traveling the world, Paris in the summer.. Spain in the spring.
WHAT IS YOUR GO TO OUTFIT?
Jeans and a white T-shirt.
WHEN YOU GET A QUIET MOMENT, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO THE MOST?
Eat chocolate. Drink a glass of wine. Burn incense. Check something of my list.
YOU FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN?
I have had a shower.. or when I have spent a day on the beach.. or when I am pregnant.
