It takes a most courageous woman to pack life up into a retro caravan and take off on an epic adventure around this glorious continent we are so fortunate to call home (Australia) and there is no doubt that the Simple Folk's Bohannah Gerritsen is just that. What makes this tale even more inspiring is that her husband and three beautiful children, one a newborn at the time, are all along for the journey! A lust for fresh new experiences, road tripping and spending wholesome quality time as a family has most definitely led these folk on a golden, authentic and incredibly aspirational trip of a lifetime. This week on the journal we chat with the ever extraordinary Bohannah about all things kids, adventure, style and caravan life.
I’m a simple girl, a bit of a straight shooter and would choose the country over city any day of the week.
We always wake up early which I love, especially in the summer time. The coffee machine goes on first, then we all have breakfast together. We love listening to music in the morning. It always sets us up for a good day! My husband works fly in fly out and while he’s away we like to enjoy quiet days at home because when he’s here we’re usually pretty busy. We often hit the road and head to our favourite spots down South or catch up with friends and family. We unwind at night by cooking dinner together. The kids love getting involved and then there’s always about 20 books before bedtime.
Yes we are. Call us crazy! The good - Our ever-changing scenery and new experiences and the wholesome, quality time we’re spending together. It’s so nice having Tye home to watch Olive grow and be here to see her cut her first tooth, sit up, try to crawl and taste her first foods. Because of his work, he’s missed some things in the past with our other two babies. Iggy and Arch are really thriving on the trip too, probably because of all the attention we are able to spread evenly amongst the three. The bad - Sunny (the caravan) isn’t holding up too well on the road. Only today her back panel fell off while we were driving and it took 3 hours to stitch it back up (with the help of a few fellow van-ers!) We bought her on a whim and didn’t really plan on her falling apart, which was probably really silly of us ha! The surprising - That we have already spent over 120 hours in the car and travelled more than 7000kms.
Tye and I have always loved taking road trips, whether it be short drives to the Southwest or driving around the South Island in New Zealand. When we started our family, the road trips continued and the idea of traveling around Australia was something we were considering. When we fell pregnant with Olive the idea receded a little but a few short months ago it popped back into our thoughts and so I jumped at the idea and ran with it. We would’ve loved to have gone for longer but didn’t want to stay away from family for any longer with Olive still so young.
Ugh so many! The places we have seen already have exceeded my expectations! Some of the drives themselves have been incredible. Our landscape is so diverse. From red earth to pretty wildflowers, long stretches of open space to palms and gorges and tropical-style springs . . . I’m constantly wanting to pull over to photograph it all. Fern pool at Karijini National Park is a turquoise oasis. Then we went to Zebedee Springs at El Questro and that just blew our minds. We’ve just seen Lake Argyle, the second largest lake in Australia, and that was incredibly sublime. We have only been on the road just under a month so I’m sure there’s many more highlights to come!
The beach. We like to head down in the late afternoon and stay for sunset. There is something so beautiful about that time of day - the ambience, the colours, the calm we feel just being there and watching day turn into night. There’s also a good chance we will have fish and chips, so there’s that too.
That true happiness comes from within. I want them to understand that they are the creators of their reality and that the universe is always listening. I want them to follow their passions and never stop dreaming. We also want to raise them with a true understanding of food and health as we believe that’s one of the most important factors in living a fruitful life.
I’ve always been really simple with a touch of bohemian. I’m a comfort gal, even more so since becoming a mum.
I love a simple tee and mid rise jean combo but I also live in wide leg pants and a good tie up blouse!
Edit my photos! It’s where my passion lies and I could look through my photos editing all day long. -Which is why I love Instagram as a platform to share my images.
Putting on a little makeup, doing my hair and going out with the family! I’m so proud and happy to be living this life with my husband and kids. They always make me feel beautiful on the inside and outside xx
