Self-described “creator of magic” and all around dream goddess Brittney Valverde lives the kind of enchanted life many of us can only dream of. Ensconced on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai with her pro surfer husband Evan Valiere and most beautiful daughter Jaya their lives revolve around family, connection and of course the ocean!
Here at Chasing Unicorns, we believe in naturally beautiful, powerful women and Brittney is a most phenomenal example of these characteristics and many more. Fortunately, years ago Chasing Unicorns founder Sarah Humphrey crossed paths with this Costa Rican/Filipino wonder of a woman whilst also residing in Hanalei Bay with her husband and (back then) small family. United by a shared passion for vintage fashion, the ocean and a living a simpler existence the women became lifelong friends.
All women are simply extraordinary whether it be the lives they live, in their personal style, their passions, actions or beliefs. All woman have insights to share that are sure to inspire another and this interview is a little snapshot into the exceptional life of Brintey Valverde, motherhood, ocean, fashion and all.
COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE SENTENCE?
Hard to do! Ummm...calm, passionate, tomboy, feminine, explorer? Haha next!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE?
Jaya and I wake up and lay in bed for our morning cuddle for about 10 mins. We talk about our dreams and rub our faces together. Then we call for "dadda" and hide under the covers. He pretends not to find us. It's very precious. For sure my favorite time of day.
Then we have some brekky and get ready for the day. 3 days a week Jaya is in school and while she's in school I work as an esthetician doing micro-current facials and endermologie treatments. In between that, I run our surf school here in Hanalei called Hanalei Surf School. After work I grab Jaya and we go for a snack and check the waves. If the waves are fun we'll walk over and Evan and I take turns surfing while Jaya climbs on her favourite tree. We're outside until dark most days so I'm always scavenging through the fridge for things to throw together for dinner. Most of the time It's some sort of vegan stir-fry. Then it's our shower and bedtime routine, always finished with a song.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH JAYA?
We love taking Jaya surfing. It's my favourite thing ever. We have a little boat we take to the bay. Jay's been going on it since she was a baby. Evan and I would take turns surfing while the other hung with her on the boat. She'd fall asleep most of the time from the rocking. When she was about 2 Evan would bring her out with her floaties on in the front of his board. I always dreamt of surfing with my family I just never considered it would be so soon! It is the BEST. Now she catches waves on her own when it's really tiny. It's perfect!
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT ISLAND LIFE, THE GOOD, THE BAD THE SURPRISING?
It's very sweet and quaint. Sometimes way too freaking small. We have a solid crew of women who I consider to be my sisters and I couldn't live here without them. We keep each other sane and have loads of fun. 5 pm wine o'clock at the compound, it’s the saving grace of us all!
HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD “CHANGED” YOU?
I feel as if I have a new pair of eyes. Seeing everything through a toddler is probably one of the greatest gifts. There's appreciation in the things we as adults take for granted. It has made me strive to be a better person and to do the very best I can at all times. I am not saying I am in my best self at all times but I sure as hell try. They're little sponges!!
Also, I used to be an expert at "chilling". Can't chill now, there are always a million things to do! Every mother knows how it is.
WHAT ARE THE VALUES AND PASSIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE MOST TO PASS ON TO JAYA?
She is naturally wild, fiery and free. Confident and loving and kind, yet sets boundaries. She knows what she wants and gets it. She has all the tools she needs to be an incredible human I hope that she never loses touch with that and always trusts her own guidance system.
WHAT INFLUENCES/INSPIRES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
My mood and stages of my life. I dress how I feel. It's very much self-expression for me. I love unique and interesting things. The uglier the better sometimes. I guess that stems from me not ever wanting what everyone else has, never trying to fit in. I don't really have one style icon or era I pull from, it's more of gathering all of them and blending them into my own.
My mid 20's were very goth punk. Dark lipstick, blunt fringe, and a septum ring. Always funny to think back on.
YOU ARE A PERFECT MODEL FOR THE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE YOU ADVOCATE, HOW DID YOUR INTEREST IN THIS EVOLVE?
I've always led a healthy lifestyle. Growing up surfing really created a safe haven for me to be alone and intimate with nature in a fun playful way. I really feel this has influenced me as a person. I also started practicing yoga at 15 and this sparked a very deep interest in my self-evolution and spirituality. I love cultivating different practices and ceremonies to connect deeper with my soul's purpose. I hold tea ceremonies where I serve tea to my closest sisters on the new and full moon. We sit in silent meditation drinking rounds of tea in candlelight cultivating the energy of the moon for manifestation. It's pretty magical and definitely what I look forward to every month. There is so much power within women gathering with intention! Jaya comes every time it's taught her reverence and I'm sure so much more.
WHEN YOU GET A QUIET MOMENT, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO THE MOST?
I've been really loving the sauna. I sit in there for 45mins alone and listen to a meditation or podcast.
YOU FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN?
I'm taking care of myself. When I'm in my power and wearing a rad outfit to go with it all!
