HAND CROCHET : A LOVE AFFAIR
There is a lot to love about the history of fashion, the distinct eras of style, the artisan techniques and the many dreamy pieces that have withstood the test of time and are still as relevant and wearable today as they were the decade in which they were designed. At Chasing Unicorns there are many eras that Sarah is constantly drawn too from the past in terms of both her personal style and as design inspiration for the incredible garments that she creates. There is a strong nostalgic spirit that runs deep within each and every Chasing Unicorn's piece and this is something that we aim to show through the beautiful age-old artisan techniques that are used to add that certain je ne sais quoi to our beloved designs.
For Sarah the 60’s and the ’70s are two decades that she strongly connects with, decades filled with incredible fashion, accessories, styling and many a free-spirited vibe. These were times when fashion and life showed little constraint or care for rules and the resulting designs of these eras were nothing short of spectacular, covetable and ever so inspiring! It is from these decades that embraced individuality, the handcrafted and the unique comes an artisan technique that we adore, one that you are no doubt familiar with by now if you are a Chasing Unicorns lover…Hand crochet! Although hand crochet has been used in fashion since the Victorian era of the 1890s where it was used to adorn petticoats, dress hems and the sleepwear of the elite, it is the bohemian vibes of the crochet from the ’60s and the '70s that we are head over heels in love with at Chasing Unicorns.
The late ’60s and early ’70s were eras that embraced the hand made and hand finished everywhere from the home to fashion thus making it the perfect era for hand crochet to emerge as a burgeoning fashion must-have. This age-old artisan technique became super trendy and by the 70’s it was ultimate in chic. From hand-crocheted twin sets and ponchos to maxi skirts and dresses it was a look and technique that defined these decades in history and most certainly one that is still replicated in today's modern world.
Our forever love affair with hand crochet is evident in so many Chasing Unicorn's pieces both past and present from the sweetest of hand-crocheted hems and our most stunning "Feels like love" skirt to the effortlessly boho "Happy Days" poncho its a finish and style that defines so much of what Chasing Unicorn's is all about…hand made, hand finished, slow fashion that is inspired by the golden eras and techniques of decades long past.
Hand crochet has most definitely won a place in our hearts with its bohemian chicness, vintage vibes and handmade versatility…we hope that you adore it just as much as we do xx
