YOU LIVE, BREATHE AND CREATE A MOST MAGICAL ARTISTIC WORLD FOR YOUR CHILDREN. WHO, WHAT OR WHERE INSPIRES THIS SEEMINGLY UNBRIDLED CREATIVITY THAT YOU POSSESS?
What a beautiful compliment...Thank you.
Since I was little I have seen the beauty in everyday objects. I would pick a posy of weeds for mum intrigued by the silvery colour of the thistle fluff...I kept a dead mouse I found in my pocket, smooth river rocks, bird skeletons, empty snail shells and I painted every day of my early childhood. I often wonder where does all this creativity we possess as children goes for so many people as they get older... It came back for me when I had my own children. I follow a variety of artists on Instagram and I find inspiration on Pinterest, I love browsing Etsy. A couple of hours by myself can easily be spent in a book store pouring over books and my friends constantly sending me pictures with art and craft projects, that make them think of us, with the huge trust we can pull it off haha. And you know - we give so many different things a go. The luxury and beauty is, that whatever we do is for us and for fun or for our friends and family as a present. There is no need for perfection. My sewing skills are not improving and all the things we do are so imperfect but we have so much joy in the progress. One thing leads to another it's all very natural and my children are so young so they still think that whatever I do or create is amazing.
YOUR PARENTING IS INCREDIBLY HANDS ON AND YOU ARE VERY PRESENT IN YOUR CHILDRENS DAY TO DAY. IS THIS A REFLECTION OF YOUR OWN UPBRINGING IN GERMANY?
I grew up in a small town by a river in Russian occupied Germany. With shops constantly empty, almost all families had vegetable gardens, pickled and conserved, a barrel of sauerkraut in every cellar. Kale was Gruenkohl. Eating seasonal was the only option. We spent a lot of time playing outside. And here I am, trying to create this childhood for my children all over again. In a place where all of this is held in high value, Byron Bay.
ONE OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS HAS ASPERGERS, TELL US A LITTLE OF THE GOOD, THE CHALLENGING AND THE SURPRISING.
The biggest step was to get an assessment done. You can tell yourself for a long time, things will pass, she will outgrow certain ways of reacting and learn and you don't want that label for your child. But everything can only improve with knowledge and support and understanding. When your child has asperges, you don't see any imaginary play. Toys get organised and arranged but not really played with. This was when I realised setting up creative activities kept her actually interested. Often I just started them by myself and I pretended this is just what I am doing… never underestimate curiosity. It works this way for all my children I have found out. Socialising can be hard. Too many people, children she does not know, too much noise, no control over a situation is stressful for her.
We focus on learning how to read facial expression, our priorities are always understanding empathy and kindness. This is just the start of our journey.
YOUR INSTAGRAM IS A TRUE ODE TO THE HANDMADE NOT TO MENTION THE MINDBLOWINGLY BEAUTIFUL POSSIBILITY THAT SURROUNDS US IN THE EVERY DAY. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CREATIVE?
I was always the kid walking home from school taking 20x longer than my brother... Everything was of interest to me. Moving to the other side of the world was a little bit like being a child again. Learning all about Australian and Byron Bays local flora and fauna. Reading a lot to be able to answer all those questions I had. Being able to say " I don't know, let's find out together. “ We just went through a butterfly stage. I would be able to get a job on a butterfly farm now for sure after reading so much about them with the kids! We turned our bath in a butterfly house, bought chrysalis and watched them hatch. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have shared with my children.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEDIUM TO CREATE WITH AND WHY?
We are embracing so many things and love to learn something new all the time. Collecting seaweed or growing mushrooms, experimenting with edible flowers and baking blossom crispbread or making petal lollipops, setting dead insects we find in resin, pressing flowers and making clay necklaces and pins for our friends. But we always come back to experimenting with fabric we dye with botanicals, passionfruit skin, bark, avocado seeds, butterfly pea flowers or hibiscus, just to name a few. The possibilities are endless. We created fabric artworks for the kid's room and my oldest daughter is able to point at the different shades and recalls the day and what we used to dye the fabrics.
WHAT ARE THE VALUES AND PASSION THAT YOU HOPE TO INSTILL AND NURTURE IN YOUR CHILDREN?
Be kind. Deal gracefully with obstacles. Don't be afraid to be afraid. See the beauty and magic in those small things all around you. Love books and nature. When you find comfort, calm and happiness in those two things, whatever your future holds you will always be able to visit a library or find peace on a bushwalk, by the seaside, in a forest, by the river...
WE ARE SO FORTUNATE AS MUMMAS IN THE NORTHERN RIVERS TO KEEP THE COMPANY OF SO MANY BEAUTIFUL, OPEN, LOVING, INSPIRING, STRONG AND SUPPORTIVE WOMEN AND FELLOW MOTHERS. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR TRIBE.
It took motherhood to truly understand the importance of female friendships. Almost everyone I know has moved from somewhere and left the support system of the extended family behind to live in this outstandingly beautiful place. Here we all are, making a living, raising our kids and more often than not we all have relatives that don’t even live on the same continent. We need each other. I am so grateful for my friends.
YOU FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN?
After a good night sleep, or when being kissed, spending a day in nature and like any woman - when wearing a pretty dress!
