COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE SENTENCE?
I can narrow it down to a word, Bohème.
HOW DID BOHEME COME TO FRUITION?
I created my first company at 21, called IWEARTHEHEADRESS. I sold my handmade head wraps in shops in North America, France and Australia. I focused on vintage and natural fabrics which were just another step in my journey to Boheme. I finally had my “I’m finally successful!” moment when my label was sold on Free People and they wanted to continue working with me. I wanted to close my shop and start a small vintage shop online. I had been so busy my first 3 years as a mother and desperately wanted to slow down. On a whim I created an Instagram page
and a website and came up with the name Bohème Goods. I wasn’t expecting the warm welcome to the vintage world that I’ve received these past 2 years but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m far busier than I have ever been but because I love what I do and know it has a positive impact on the Earth, every not so beautiful moment makes it all worth it.
ACROSS ANY MEDIUM, WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR BOHEME?
When I started Bohème I felt I was finally free to express my thoughts visually and collect pieces that sort of showcased the way I see life. While I was in Africa I gained an entirely new outlook on what beauty is. I began to see it in unsuspecting places and ever since I’ve been known to stop in my tracks to take a photo of a piece of wood with beautiful layers and shades or stop the car to admire architecture, even if it’s just a doorway.
WHAT IS YOU MOST TREASURED VINTAGE FIND?
This is a heavier question than any for me haha, my most treasured find is actually a quilted floral jacket my mum wore in the late 70’s in Europe, when I travelled to Europe on my own at 15 she packed it in my suitcase without me knowing and it’s been my most treasured piece ever since.
YOU HAVE SUCH A DISTINCT AND EXQUISITE AESTHETIC, WHAT HAS SHAPED/INSPIRED YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
My love affair with vintage translates across all realms and my personal style has been influenced by old magazines and photographs of women and men in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY?
Road trip!! Whether we’re in Canada, America or abroad we love to pack our bags and venture to somewhere we’ve never been. We turn the music loud and roll the windows down and the smiles on our faces, those are there to stay.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE BALANCING BOHEME WITH MOTHERHOOD?
I recently hired a friend of mine as a nanny. She works 3-4 days a week and this gives me time to source, photograph, edit, and pack orders. It is so incredibly time-consuming running a business solo and I cannot recommend hiring out help when able. I still spend hours in thrift shops with the boys but there is nothing quite like walking out of a shop with no matchbox cars or legos.
WHAT ARE THE VALUES AND PASSIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE MOST TO PASS ON TO YOUR KIDS?
To be passionate about Mother Earth and all of her inhabitants. Animals are not ours to slaughter in the name of food, the Earth isn’t ours to destroy in the name of greed, and that the human race is the only race. Find something or someone to care deeply about and live in a way that helps them grow.
WHAT IS YOUR GO TO OUTFIT?
High waisted denim bells and a worn white tee tucked in. I tend to team it back with a big basket bag and St. Agni loafers (and probably a hat, I own a lot of hats).
WHAT DOES THE TERM "STYLE" MEAN TO YOU?
Style is the unspoken introduction to what we’re inspired by.
WHEN YOU GET A QUIET MOMENT, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO THE MOST?
Our home is filled with treasures from different places and different times. I find that the beauty of the objects we surround ourselves with is lost after time amidst our busy schedules. I like to pick up a book that’s gotten dusty and flip through the pages or sort through our record collection and listen to an album I haven’t heard in a while.
YOU FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN?
The morning after a day at the beach, I’m sun-kissed and my freckles have darkened. No amount of makeup can top that.
